Gewandhaus Organist
Michael Schönheit studied conducting (under Wolf-Dieter Hauschild), piano (Günter Kootz) and organ (Wolfgang Schetelich) at Leipzig's University of Music and Theatre "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" from 1978 to 1985. In 1984 he won third prize at the Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig. He was awarded the Mendelssohn Scholarship and appeared in the Gewandhaus for the first time at the Young Artists International Festival. After completing the state examination in 1985, he succeeded his father as organist, director of music and conductor of the Thuringia Boys Choir in Saalfeld (until 1990). In 1986 he was appointed Gewandhaus organist and became a member of the Bach Orchestra. He received the Gera Arts Award in 1988 and the Leipzig Critics' Prize in 1989. Michael Schönheit serves on the juries of many national and international competitions. He has taught at Nürnberg's Meistersinger Conservatory since the beginning of the 1994/95 winter semester. The Gewandhaus Organist gives concerts in Europe, Japan and the US and has made numerous recordings. In addition to the organ, harpsichord and piano, he has increasingly devoted himself to conducting in recent years. In March 1996 he was appointed Honorary Cathedral Organist at the Merseburg Cathedral.
