The Mendelssohn Foyer is an entrance foyer with an area of approximately 450 square metres which also contains the Gewandhaus Box Office. The foyer acquired its name from the sculpture of Felix Mendelssohn by Jo Jastram, which was erected in front of the Gewandhaus in 1993 and has been displayed in the redesigned foyer since 1 November 2003.

For twenty-two years the foyer housed the monumental sculpture of Beethoven, a major work by artist Max Klinger on loan from the Museum of Fine Arts. The Beethoven sculpture has found a place in the new museum building, which opened in 2004.

The Mendelssohn Foyer is an ideal setting for musical performances, readings, exhibitions, receptions and banquets. The space can be arranged flexibly to accommodate each event. The Mendelssohn Foyer is connected directly to the Main Foyer.

Sound support is provided by mobile equipment connected with the house studios. The opening hours of the Gewandhaus Box Office should be taken into account when using the Mendelssohn Foyer.
