St. Thomas's Church and the Leipzig Opera
In 1840 the City of Leipzig recognized the musicians who formed the basis of the city's theatre, church and concert orchestra and provided the music for these sites as the "City Orchestra." It was made up of the 27 musicians who were joined together in the "orchestra pension fund," which had been established in 1786 - an ensemble that performed at official and social occasions. This association altered the self-image of the professional musicians, who from then on regarded and organised themselves as an autonomous orchestra. The orchestra pension fund was the forerunner of the present-day Association of Members of the Gewandhaus Orchestra.
When the orchestra came under the aegis of the city in 1840, it was charged with the task - still in effect to this day - of providing the services of the Gewandhaus Orchestra at three Leipzig performance venues: accompanying the St. Thomas's Boys Choir at St. Thomas's Church, for productions of the Leipzig Opera and for the Grand Concerts in the Gewandhaus.
These three functions make the Gewandhaus Orchestra one of the busiest orchestras in Germany, with over 200 performances in Leipzig and on tour, and the centre of Leipzig's musical life.
